What is Runner Academy?
Runner Academy exists to teach, inspire and empower everyday people to lead healthier lives, achieve their running goals, and reach new milestones by tapping into their running potential.
By providing a complete system for running success we believe anyone can be successful at any race distance. No matter your age or how experienced or inexperienced you are as a runner, you’ll learn something to improve your training and reach your goals. You won’t just gain skills – you’ll gain confidence.

Do you focus on one specific race distance?
Many running websites and training plans focus on the marathon exclusively. While we believe that anyone can train and cross the finish line of the marathon maybe you want to start off with something a bit more manageable and progress on your own pace. We can guide you to your goal whatever it is. If it is the marathon – great! – for many that is the goal and we are here to help you! But if that means starting with a 5K to get active again that’s fantastic too.
We believe that no matter what race you want to complete, the core foundation for success is the same. Maybe you only want to run a 5K now, but learning the ins and outs of training makes you prepared should you decide to run longer distances later.
A race should not be a short term goal that is accomplished and has no lasting benefit. Our goal is to give you the tools to be successful in your running so it becomes a lifestyle for you and allows you to achieve more than you ever thought possible.
How can Runner Academy help me?
Runner Academy brings expert training strategies and customized training plans previously available only to top athletes to everyone.
We take the guesswork out of running and provide a foundation for success. Running your best comes down to three essentials: knowledge, skills, and experiences. But it starts with knowledge.
If you are looking to complete your first 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon or Marathon you are in the right place. If you are looking to improve your times in any of these races or approach your training in a new way you are also in the right place.
Runner Academy covers all aspects of training with more than 40 easy to follow courses some of which include: goal setting, determining your pace, staying comfortable while running, nutrition, injury prevention and the ‘secrets’ to racing success you can only know from real race day experience.
We also provide detailed training plans based on which race you are training for and your current ability level. Our plans are rooted in science and provide you with everything you need. No generic schedules of mileage alone here but instead you’ll have specific workouts with a purpose and an understanding of why.

Isn’t running just one foot in front of the other?
There is so much more to training than just following a training schedule of when and how much to run! Most runners go into their races unprepared and spend season after season learning through trial and error. Being unprepared is way to not have a good experience or possibly get hurt. If you start out on the right foot you will achieve success.
You have likely found that there is just so much information out there that it can lead to information overload. Most of it is incomplete or overly technical which can leave you vulnerable to sub-par training and race day performance. However, if you know how to approach any of these distances, step-by-step and following a system, in plain English, you have a high probability of success.
About Founder/Head Coach Matt Johnson
Matt is a USATF and RRCA certified running coach, has been running for over 15 years and has done it all – 5Ks, 10Ks, Half-Marathons, Marathons and distances in between. He believes in hard work, challenging goals and constant improvement.
Matt’s philosophy is that runners should train their whole bodies, not just their legs. The best runners have not only leg speed and endurance but also solid core strength and upper body strength. Total body fitness leads to better race times and fewer injuries.
What he also likes to teach people is to enjoy these experiences–whether it is a few miles around your neighborhood or along the lakefront in his hometown of Chicago–running is something that anyone can learn how to do successfully.
Matt believes that no matter your level in the sport, running a personal best or achieving a goal is one of the greatest feelings you can experience. Guiding athletes to this experience and watching them succeed is what drives everything at Runner Academy. Will you join us at the finish line?
